Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

readily biodegradable

Additional information

The parent compound 3 -chloropropionyl chloride (CAS 625-36-5) rapidly hydrolyses in contact with water and forms 3-chloropropionic acid (CAS 107-94-8). The biodegradation potential will, therefore, be assessed based on information available for the hydrolysis product 3-chloropropionic acid (CAS 107-94-8).

3-chloropropionic acid is readily biodegradable in freshwater based on the results of standard ready test that show 95% removal after 28 days (Trénel J. and Kühn R., 1982). Activated sludge was used as inoculum. In an addition, in a Zahn-Wellens test with industrial activated sludge 3-chloropropionic acid was determined to be inherently biodegradable (98% DOC removal after 16 days, BASF AG, 1978)

Based on the available experimental information the hydrolysis product the substance is considered to be readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).
