Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Butyryl chloride did not cause gene mutations in an Ames test.

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (negative)

Additional information

Butyryl chloride was tested in the Ames reverse mutation assay (GLP compliant study according to OECD guideline 471 and 472) using S. typhimurium strains TA98, TA100, TA1535 and TA1537 and E. coli strain WP2 at 20 to 5000 µg/plate in a standard plate test and 4 to 1000 µg/plate in a preincubation test, both with and without metabolic activation (BASF AG, 1998). In both tests, the test substance did not lead to an increase in the number of revertant colonies either with or without metabolic activation. In some strains, a weak bacteriotoxic effect was occasionally observed from about 500 - 1000 µg/plate onward. No precipitation of the test substance was found.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the results of the Ames test, butyryl chloride does not need to be classified according to the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
