Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Parent compound butyryl chloride and hydrolysis product butyric acid: Significant accumulation in organisms is not to be expected.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A study is not required for this tonnage band. Moreover, and in accordance with Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, Annex IX, Section 9.3.1, Column 2, the study does not need to be conducted if the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (for instance a log Kow ≤ 3). Butyryl chloride (CAS 141-75-3) has an estimated log Kow of 0.51 (KOWWIN v1.68). The substance decomposes rapidly to form HCl and butyric acid (CAS 107-92-6). The experimental log Kow of 0.79 (Hansch, C et al., 1995) for the hydrolysis product butyric acid does not indicate a significant potential for bioaccumulation.
