Additional information

As summarised by Cuthbert et al (1985) in the published data HMX 60% (w/w) in physiological saline had a mild irritant effect to skin in an in vivo rabbit skin irritation test but the effect did not reach the mean value of ≥ 2,3 - ≤ 4,0 for erythema/ eschar or for oedema in at least 2 of 3 tested animals from gradings at 24 and 72 hours after patch removal. Moreover, dry RDX did not cause any irritation in the same type of study.

In the eye irritation test reported in the same publication (Cuthbert et al, 1985) HMX (as such) had a mild irritant effect to eyes but the effect didn't meet the criteria for classification to eye irritant category 2 : — corneal opacity ≥ 1 and/or — iritis ≥ 1, and/or — conjunctival redness ≥ 2 and/or — conjunctival oedema (chemosis) ≥ 2 — calculated as the mean scores following grading at 24, 48 and 72 hours after installation of the test material in at least in 2 of 3 tested animals.

Justification for classification or non-classification

On the basis of the above data, HMX does not meet the criteria for classification as a skin irritant. According to Commission Regulation 1272/2008, HMX is not classified as Skin Irritant.

As noted above, HMX is not classified as Eye Irritant under the Commission Regulation 1272/2008.
