Biodegradation of MBOCA was investigated in two (unreliable) studies with very dissimilar results, i.e. <= 10% biodegradation in an

inherent biodegradation test compared to removal of the parent compound up to 95 % in a continuous reactor test. Taken the high adsorption potential of MBOCA into account, it is very likely that the results from both studies were influenced by adsorption of the substance either to the microorganisms or to the soil particles used in the test system. In addition, results from the predictive models in BIOWIN indicate degradation can be assumed to happen very slow. Therefore, MBOCA should be considered not readily nor inherently biodegradable and further testing is not required. Another (unreliable) biodegradation study conducted in soil showed that MBOCA does not significantly biodegrade in soil as well.
