Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The purpose of the study was to compare 4 in vitro short-term assays predicting the cytotoxic potency of different substances including hexylamine.
Test systems were the followings:
1) Inhibition of cell growth in Ascites sarcoma BP 8 cells,
2) Inhibition of oxidative metabolism in hamster brown fat cells,
3) Membrane damage of human diploid embryonic lung fibroblasts,
4) Inhibition of the ciliary activity using chicken embryo trachea.

Results and discussion

Details on results:
The relative toxicity is given in mean activity of the substance which is expressed with the aid of the following 10-point scale:
0= 0-9% activity,
1= 10-19% activity,
2= 20-29% and so on.
For hexylamine, values were as follow:
1) Inhibition of cell growth test: 2
2) Inhibition of oxidative metabolism: 2
3) Membrane damage: 9
4) Inhibition of ciliary activity: 0
The mean activity based on the four tests taken together was: 3.3
