Evaluation criteria:
A test material is defined as mutagenic in this assay if:

- a dose-related (over at least two test material concentrations) increase in the number of revertants is induced, the maximal effect is a "clear increase", and the effects are reproduced at similar concentration levels in the same test system;

- "clear increases" occur at least at one test material concentration, higher concentrations show strong precipitation or cytotoxicity, and the effects are reproduced at the same concentration level in the same test system.

Conclusions:
The test substance is not mutagenic in these bacterial test systems either with or without exogenous metabolic activation at the dose levels investigated.
Executive summary:

The study was performed according to the OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals No 471. The mutagenicity studies were conducted in the absence and in the presence of a metabolizing system derived from rat liver homogenate. A dose range of 6 different doses from 4 microgram/plate to 10000 microgram/plate was used. Control plates without mutagen showed that the number of spontaneous revertant colonies was similiar to that described in the literature. All the positive control compounds gave the expected increase in the number of revertant colonies. The test compound proved to be not toxic to the bacterial strains. In the absence of the metabolic activation system the test compound did not show a dose dependent increase in the number of revertants in any of the bacterial strains. Also in the presence of a metabolic activation system, treatment of the cells with the test substance did not result in relevant increases in the number of revertant colonies. With and without addition of S9 mix as the external metabolizing system, the test substance was not mutagenic under the experimental conditions described.
