Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Conclusions:
In a GLP study conducted according to OECD Guideline 110, the particle size distribution of a sample of trisodium EDDS ranged from <2 µm to >63 µm, and the mass median diameter was 50-63 µm.
Executive summary:

In a GLP study conducted according to OECD Guideline 110, the particle size distribution for trisodium EDDS was determined by sieving to remove particles greater than 63 µm and laser diffraction analysis of a suspension of the residue in ethanol, prepared by low-level sonication for 20 seconds.

The size distribution analysis showed that 0.4% of particles were less than 2 µm diameter, 1.8% were between 2 and 10 µm, 42.1% were between 10 and 50 µm, 14.6% were between 50 and 63 µm and 41.2% were greater than 63 µm. The mass median diameter was 50-63 µm.

Additional information

In a GLP study conducted according to OECD Guideline 110, the particle size distribution for trisodium EDDS was determined by sieving to remove particles greater than 63 µm and laser diffraction analysis of a suspension of the residue in ethanol, prepared by low-level sonication for 20 seconds. The mass median diameter was 50-63 µm (van Helvoirt and Merkus, 1993).

In addition, in a GLP study, the particle size distribution for a sample of EDDS acid ranged from <53 µm to <300 µm, and the mass median diameter was 150-300 µm (Gair et al. 2002). [Data on EDDS free acid is considered relevant to use for predicting the particle size distribution of trisodium EDDS, and is acceptable for using as read-across information.]
