Key result
Relative self-ignition temperature:
320 °C

In the investigation of self-ignition in the Grewer Oven for the pure test item, an endothermic process was detected at approximately 130 °C, which can be assigned to the melting of the test item. An exothermic effect was observed at approximately 320 °C, which led to a maximum temperature of 550 °C. After the measurement the basket was empty.

For the test item in mixture with Kieselguhr an exothermic effect was observed at approximately 320 °C, which led to a maximum temperature of 560 °C.

Results of the screening test for self-ignition in the Grewer Oven

Experiment Onset self- ignition / °C Maximum temperature / °C
Pure test item 320 550
Test item in mixture with Kieselguhr (1:1) 320 560
Conclusions:
The pure test item indicated a self-ignition at atmospheric pressure at a temperature of approximately 320 °C. The test in accordance with VDI sheet 1 (Grewer-Oven) is a screening test only. However, test results indicate that no full test should be initiated and no classification and labelling is required for that substance as follows:

UN Transport Regulation:
The test item has not to be classified as self-heating substance in class 4, division 4.2 according to the UN Transport Regulation.

GHS / CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex 1: 2.11:
The test item has not to be classified as self-heating substance according to GHS/CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex 1: 2.11.

Description of key information

The test in accordance with VDI sheet 1 (Grewer-Oven) is a screening test only. However, test results indicate that no full test should be initiated and no classification and labelling is required for that substance.
