Description of key information

The toxicity to the aquatic environment of 2-Butoxyethyl methacrylate was investigated by performing GLPcompliant

short-term toxicity studies to freshwater aquatic invertebrates and algae in accordance with Annex VII of REACH.

The algae species Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was identified as the most sensitive species based on the outcome of the investigatin with a 72h EC50 of 17.5 mg/l. As the lowest L(E)C50 for 2-Butoxyethyl methacrylate is above 1 mg/l, the substance does not meet criteria for classification as Aquatic Acute 1; H400 in accordance with Regulation (EC) N° 1272/2008.

There is no available data on the chronic toxicity of 2 -Butoxyethyl methacrylate to the aquatic environment. AS the substance is being registered under REACH in the 1 -10 tonnage band there is no information requirement for long-term studies. Therefore, the classification of the registered substance for chonic effects is based on the short-term toxicity to the aquatic environment and the ready biodegradability of the substance. Given that the substance is redily biodegradabnle and the lowest EC50 is <100 mg/L, the substance does not meet the criteria for classification for long lasting effects to the aquatic environment in accordance with the CLP Regulation (EC) N ° 1272/2008
