NaOH is a strong alkaline substance that dissociates completely in water to Na+ and OH-. High water solubility and low vapour pressure indicate that NaOH will be found predominantly in aquatic environment. This implies that it will not adsorb on particulate matter or surfaces. Atmospheric emissions as aerosols are rapidly neutralized by carbon dioxide and the salts will be washed out by rain (OECD SIDS of sodium hydroxide (March 2002), section 2.2, page 8).
