Description of key information

Experimental data on the toxicity of the substance menthyl acetate to microorganisms are not available. The toxicity control in the ready biodegradability study did not inhibit the activity of the inoculum at a concentration of 2.6 mg/L. The lowest Minimum Inhibitory concentration in a study with different microorganisms was 6 ppm (Jirovetz et al. 2009).

A guideline-conform study on the toxicity of the substance menthyl acetate to aquatic microorganisms is not available. Available information from the toxicity control in the valid study on the ready biodegradability (Müller 1999) shows that the substance did not inhibit the activity of the tested inoculum at a concentration of 2.6 mg/L, which can be considered as the NOEC for the inhibition of microorganisms. This was obvious since the degradability of the reference substance sodium benzoate was not significantly inhibited. Additionally, supporting information from a study on antimicrobial effects of the substance (Jirovetz et al. 2009) with four microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Proteus vulgaris and Salmonella sp.) can be used to establish a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 6 mg/L found in P. vulgaris.
