Tests on all three trophic levels (fish, daphnia, algae) were performed to examine the aquatic toxicity of the Sulfomium compound mixture. Algae turned out to be the most sensitive species revealing an EC50 (72h) of 0.058 mg/L and an EC10 (72h) of 0.029 mg/L based on growth inhibition. Thus, the mixture is considered to be very toxic to aquatic organisms. Investigations on the effects towards aquatic invertebrates support this conclusion by providing an acute EC50 (48h) of 0.138 mg/L for the immobilisation of Daphnia magna and a chronic LOEC (21d) of 0.27 mg/L based on mortality in a reproduction test. Fish turned out to be less sensitive, with an measured LC50 (96h) of 14.6 mg/L for the golden orfe (Leuciscus idus).
