Approximately 100g of sample was heated in a conical flask with the heat source provided from a hot plate. A condenser was used to collect any distillate from the substance, with a thermometer measuring the temperature of the test substance, and a second thermometer to monitor the condensate temperature. The sample was heated through a range of 100ºC to 230ºC, with the temperature of the condensate monitored throughout.

At 195°C a small amount of liquid starts to boil. This continues up to 230°C (the maximum temperature reached) as the F37 decomposes. The condensate has a temperature of 75-85°C, suggesting that ethanol may be the decomposition product. The test was terminated at 230ºC due to the decomposition of the sample.
