Findings Main test

The test item solution was held at constant temperature (20.0 ± 0.2 °C). 59 minutes after conclusion of the first measurement series, a second measurement series was performed for verification purposes. 10 measurements were done for each test series.

Mean surface tension (mN/m)

Standard deviation

First series

72.80

0.05

Second series

72.68

0.09

After the first and the second measurement series, the difference between mean values was less than 5%. Therefore no additional measurement series was required.

Result test item

During the specified period of time, no significant changes in the surface tension were detected.

Values ranging from 72.62 mN/m to 72.92 mN/m were recorded showing no significant variations. The values of the single determinations show no significant difference (0.16%) between mean values of the two measurement series)

As the determined surface tension of the test item was higher than 60 mN/m, the test item can be classified as not surface active.

Validity

The surface tension of water at the measuring temperature was calculated using the following equation:σ= B r^µ(1+br)

With

σ: Surface tension in mN/m

B: Constant 235.8 mN/m

r: 1- T/Tc

T: absolute temperature in K

Tc: critical temperature 647.096 K

µ: constant 1.256

b: constant -0.625

The constants result from the graph of the equation of function in temperature dependence of the surface tension of water.

The calculated value for the surface tension of H2O at 20.8 °C is: 72.61 mN/m

The surface tension of the negative control was determined with 72.62 mN/mat 20.8 °C, therefore showing a difference of 0.01 % from the calculated value. The difference lies within the accepted range of 1% deviation from the calculated value.

Discussion

The values of the single determinations show no significant difference (0.16% between mean values of the two measurement series). All measured values lay clearly above the threshold for surface tension which is stated in the guidelines.

The surface tension of the negative control was determined with a difference of 0.01% from the stated literature value.

Therefore, the result of the test is considered valid and the test item is classified as “not surface active” in a concentration of 1.00 g/L.
