Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Several tests have been completed over various time periods and to a variety of algaes and cyanobacterias, the key study reports EC50 levels of 0.1 mg/l with supporting studies also reporting EC50 values very similar

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
0.1 mg/L
EC50 for marine water algae:
0.1 mg/L

Additional information

A 96-h EC50 value of 0.1 mg/L has been identified in marine algae (Phaeodactylum tricornutum)(Maddock & Taylor, 1976), based on a50% reduction in photosynthetic activity. This is the lowest value quoted for marine and freshwater algae, and will be used in the CSA.

The EC50 value for the primary degradation product triethyllead chloride is <0.2 mg/L(Maddock & Taylor, 1976).Both tetraethyl lead and triethyllead chloride give EC100 values of <2.2 mg/L

The following information is taken into account for effects on algae / cyanobacteria for the derivation of PNEC:

Several tests have been completed over various time periods and to a variety of algae and cyanobacteria, the key study reports a 96-h EC50 of 0.1 mg/L in marine algae with supporting studies also reporting similar EC50 values.

Value used for CSA:

EC50/LC50 for freshwater algae: 0.1 mg/L

EC50/LC50 for marine water algae: 0.1 mg/L
