Test animals

Species:
mouse
Strain:
CD-1
Sex:
male
Details on test animals or test system and environmental conditions:
Male CD-1 mice (30 g) were maintained on tap water and laboratory chow ad libitum.

Administration / exposure

Route of administration:
intraperitoneal
Vehicle:
water
Doses:
Five geometrically spaced doses of propionitrile wer administered ip to groups of nine or ten mice: 20-50 mg/kg.
No. of animals per sex per dose:
10
Details on study design:
All injected solutions were adjusted to volumes of 1 ml / 100 g body weight. The animals were observed for the following 7 days in all mortality experiments. The approximate time of death was recorded and the LD50 was calculated.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The toxicity of proprionitrile to mice was tested via intraperitoneal injection at concentrations of 20-50 mg/kg bw. High mortality was observed and an LD50 of 28 (25-31) mg/kg bw was determined.
