Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Melting at approximately 600°C (at 42 bar).
Decomposition starts at about 300°C at atmospheric pressure.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Heating of red phosphorus in an inert atmosphere causes no significant changes up to a temperature of about 300°C. On further heating the vapour pressure slowly increases by the formation of gaseous white phosphorus, consisting of P4-molecules. Between 400 and 420°C the vapour pressure of red phosphorus reaches 1 bar. The melting point of red phosphorus can therefore only be observed under higher pressure. According to several independent measurements the transition into the liquid state occurs between 579° and 625°C, depending on the purity and the degree of crystallinity. The corresponding pressure is approximately 42 bars.
