Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Weight of evidence: Bacterial reverse mutation assays (Ames tests), with and without metabolic activation, and a Chromosome aberration test have been conducted for bromochloromethane. Results of these tests have been considered positive evidence of mutagenicity. Bromochloromethane was mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium and E.coli tests and induced sister cromatid exchange and chromosome aberrations in Chinese hamster cells in vitro. Although these in vitro studies are not sufficient for classification may offer supporting information in the event of in vivo mutagenicity data.

Short description of key information:
Weight of evidence: Experimental results from scientific articles. Only in vitro data is available. The bacterial reverse mutation assays (Ames tests) and the Chromosome aberration test indicate potential for mutagenicity.

Endpoint Conclusion: Adverse effect observed (positive)

Justification for classification or non-classification

Only in vitro studies are available for bromochloromethane. There are no studies of exposed humans and no genotoxicity tests in vivo. Thus, there are no data available that would justify classification for germ cell mutagenicity according to CLP criteria.
