Test material

Name:
Unnamed
Type:
Constituent
Details on test material:
- Name of test material (as cited in study report): Defi base (sodium acyl ethoxy sulphonate)
Defi is a sodium acyl isethionate also known as coconut acid, 2 sulphoethyl ester, sodium salt. It is a white solid obtained from Lever Brothers, Edgewater. The main constituent is sodium acyl isethionate (65%).
- Analytical purity: 66% (sodium acyl isethionate)
- Impurities (identity and concentrations): Free fatty acid (21%), sodium isethionate (7%)
- Composition of test material, percentage of components:
sodium acyl isethionate (66%)
Free fatty acid (21%)
sodium isethionate (7%)
water (2%)
misc. (4%)
- Purity test date: 1983-01-31
- Stability under test conditions: Stabillty of solid is good, can be stored at room temperature. In solution, at room temperature and neutral pH, solutions are stable, at hlgh temperature (greater than 50 degrees C) and low pH hydrolysis will occur to some extent.

Results and discussion

Preliminary study:
Not applicable
Test performance:
The extent of sodium acetate degradation (81.5%) shows that the inoculum used in the test was viable and therefore the test was valid.
Marlon A 350 failed the test (44.9% ultimate biodegradtion)

Details on results:
Defi (base) is readily and ultimately biodegradable. The level of biodegradation observed (77.8 and 78.6%) exceeded the pass level reccomended in OECD 301B. Greater than 60% degradation occured within 10 d of reaching 10% degradation.
