Description of key information
The 3 hours EC50 value for the test substance in the Activated Sludge Respiration Inhibition Test was greater than 120 g/L (24.09 % solution) or greater than 29 g/L (100 % sodium ethylenesulphonate).
The 24 hours EC0 value for the test substance in a supporting study was 5000 g/L (30 % solution) or 1500 g/L (100 % sodium ethylenesulphonate).

Effect of sodium vinylsulphonate solution (IIBAT (c), 2010) was studied for its inhibitory effect on the respiration rate of an activated sludge under in vitro conditions according to OECD guideline 209. The sludge was collected from the Sri Venkateswara Sugar Mill, Palayasivaram, Kancheepuram District, Tamil Nadu. The dry weight of the sludge was determined to 3.9 g/L and it was enriched by adding synthetic waste water (50 mL per litre of sewage sludge). The mixture was aerated overnight at 20 ± 2 °C and used for the study. The sludge was exposed to 2.1, 5.96, 18.56, 60.02, 120.16 g/L of the test solution for a period of 3 hours. For measurement of the sensitivity of sludge, the EC50 of the standard inhibitor substance 3,5-dichlorophenol was determined after a contact time of three hours.
The EC50 (3h) of reference test item 3,5-dichlorophenol was determined as 22.49 mg/L. The EC50 (3h) of sodium vinylsulphonate solution (25.09%) was determined as greater than 120 g/L. The derived EC50 for 100% sodium ethylenesulphonate was greater than 29 g/L.

Effect of sodium vinylsulphonate was assessed for its inhibitory effect on the respiration rate of an activated sludge according to the fermentation tube method (Hoechst AG (c), 1972). The sludge was exposed to the test item for 24 hours. An EC0 value of 5000 mg/L for the 30% solution was obtained. Based on this result, the EC0 value for 100 % sodium vinylsulphonate was 1500 mg/L.
