Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Sodium vinylsulphante is exlusivly used as a 25 - 35% aqueous solution.
The melting point of the solution is ≤ -20 °C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
-20 °C

Additional information

Sodium vinylsulphonate tends to polymerize at elevated temperatures. In several patents methods to isolate the dry substance are reported. Practically, pure results for the solid form of sodium vinylsulphonate are commercially not available.

Based on (Q)SAR calculations the melting point of pure sodium vinylsulphonate is 193.71 °C. In a patent (see endpoint study record WoE_Melting point/freezing point 1985) a melting of 135 -140 °C is reported. As this information can not be regarded as reliable and no other results for the dry substance are available, it is concluded that sodium vinylsulphonate polymerizes before melting.

The melting point of the solution of 25 - 35 % Sodium vinylsulphonate in water is -20 °C or below.
