Description of key information

Readily biodegradable

A study (BASF DocID: TZ-690-001) was submitted to investigate the ready biodegradability of teflubenzuron under the conditions of OECD 301B. Teflubenzuron is not readily biodegradable according to OECD 301B.

Biodegradation in water and sediment

The DT50 of teflubenzuron was investigated in two water/sediment systems (BASF DocID: 2006/1024568). In water the DT50 ranged between 4.9 and 9.7 days, in total system between 11.4 and 21.4 days. The geomean DT50 of teflubenzuron at 20 °C in freshwater was determined to be 6.9 days. The geomean DT50 in whole system was determined to be 15.6 days at 20 °C.

The geomean DT50 of teflubenzuron was calculated to be 29.6 days at 12 °C in total system and 13.1 days at 12 °C in water (Chapter R.7b, p.222: Endpoint specific guidance Version 4.0 – June 2017).

The following metabolites were formed: 5-chloro-2,4-difluoroaniline (UNK 5 in the DAR, aniline 14C labelled: max 19.04 % AR after 30 d in water phase), 3,5-dichloro-2,4-difluorophenyl-urea (CL-902374, aniline 14C labelled: max 22,45 % AR after 14 d in water phase), 3,5-dichloro-2,4-difluoroaniline (CL-902373, aniline 14C labelled: max 26,42 % AR after 60 d in the sediment phase) and 2,6-difluorobenzoic acid (CL-245508, benzoyl 14C labelled: max 13,79 % AR after 14 d in the water phase).

Biodegradation in soil systems

The Key study Batelle (2003a, 2003/1010910) revealed a DT50 value of teflubenzuron in soil of 181.1 days at 10 °C.

Since for environmental fate modeling soil DegT50 values at reference conditions (temperature of 20°C and soil moisture at field capacity, i.e. pF2) are required, the modeling endpoints (DegT50) reported in Batelle (2003a, 2003/1010910) and Celamerck (1985, TZ-620-004) were normalized following the recommendations of FOCUS [FOCUS (2012): Generic Guidance for Tier 1 FOCUS Ground Water Assessments, version 2.2 (May. 2014), 66 pp.]. The resulting geometrical mean DT50 value was 92.1 days.

- Anaerobic conditions:

Degradation of teflubenzuron under anaerobic conditions was investigated under dark anaerobic conditions in the supporting studies. The RMS considered that the anaerobic experiment performed with the benzoyl labelled substance was not scientifically reliable due to the low recoveries and the potential loss of not trapped volatiles. In the aniline labelled experiment the major metabolite 3,5-dichloro-2,4-difluorophenylurea accounted for a maximum of 28.2 % AR after 14 d under anaerobic conditions. However, anaerobic conditions are not considered to be especially relevant for the representative uses (tomato and apple) evaluated at EU level.
