Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
not specified
Conclusions:

After 96 hours there were no mortalities in either the test concentration or the control vessel. The LC50 can be defined as > 1000mg/L W717(L-2-chloropropionic acid).
Executive summary:

The toxicity of L-2 -chloropropionic acid to fish was studied on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in a 96 hour static study according to OECD 203.

L-2-chloropropionic acid 90.4% pure was used at nominal concentrations of 0 and 1000 mg/l. The test concentration was verified by chemical analysis. Ten fish with a mean length of 4.5 cm and mean weight of 1.29 g were exposed to each test concentration. The test media pH was adjusted to pH 7.6 prior to the addition of the fish, the temperature was maintained at 15+/-1oC and the light regime was fluorescent light for 16 hours and darkness for 8 hours. The fish were not fed throughout the test period.

Observations for mortality or toxicity in the fish were made at 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours during the test.

After 96 hours no mortalities were observed in the test concentration or in the control vessel.

The LC50, defined as the concentration resulting in the death of 50% of the fish in the time period specified, was therefore >1000mg/L.
