L-2-Chloropropionic acid is classified under the CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex VI as Harmful if swallowed, R22 or Acute Toxicity 4 (H302) and Harmful in contact with skin, R21 or Acute Toxicity 4 (H312). A guideline study is reported which supports the Harmful if swallowed, R22 classification.
L-2-Chloropropionic acid is classified under the CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex VI as Acute Toxicity 4 (H302: Harmful if swallowed) and Skin Corr. 1A (H314: causes severe skin burns and eye damage).
Annex VII of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, section 8.5 states that a study for oral toxicity does not need to be conducted if the substance is classified as corrosive to the skin; however an existing study is available and has been reported.
The study (CTL/P/3892) reports an acute LD50 on female rats of 575 mg/kg/bw and 1118 mg/kg/bw for male rats. These values support the classification listed in Regulation (EC) 1272/2008.
The acute oral toxicity value of 575mg/kg/bw for female rats reported here, supports the Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex VI classifiaction of Acute Toxicity 4 (H302: Harmful if swallowed).
No acute dermal study is available. However based on data available for skin irritation/corrosivity the registrant accepts the official EC 1272/2008 Annex VI classification of Harmful in contact with skin, R21/ Acute Toxicity 4 (H312).
