measure this predicted effect. If the effect level exceeds the
water solubility by 10X, typically no effects at saturation (NES)
are reported.

Class Specific LogKow Cut-Offs
------------------------------
If the log Kow of the chemical is greater than the endpoint specific cut-offs
presented below, then no effects at saturation are expected for those endpoints.

Neutral Organics:
----------------
Maximum LogKow: 5.0 (Fish 96-hr LC50; Daphnid LC50, Mysid LC50)
Maximum LogKow: 6.0 (Earthworm LC50)
Maximum LogKow: 6.4 (Green Algae EC50)
Maximum LogKow: 8.0 (ChV)

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
The long-term toxicity to green algae was also estimated using the ECOSAR model v1.11 included in the EpiSuite program of US-EPA. The estimated chronic value (ChV) is 12.029 mg/L, the corresponding NOEC is 8.5 mg/L.
Executive summary:

The long-term toxicity to green algae was also estimated using the ECOSAR model v1.11 included in the EpiSuite program of US-EPA. The estimated chronic value (ChV) is 12.029 mg/L, the corresponding NOEC is 8.5 mg/L.

In ECOSAR, the estimated chronic toxicity is expressed as the chronic value (ChV). The ChV, is defined as the geometric mean of the no observed effect concentration (NOEC) and the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC). To derive a NOEC, the ChV can be divided by √2 (REACH Guidance R10, Table R10-1).

Executive summary:

The test substance, PROPYLAL, was tested for growth inhibition on algae Desmodesmus subspicatus .

The test was performed according to method C.3. - Freshwater Algae and Cyanobacteria, Growth Inhibition Test, Commission Regulation (EC) No. 761/2009, Annex N.

The preliminary test was performed in range of test substance nominal concentrations 1 - 100 mg/L. The analytical results from the preliminary test showed, that concentrations of the test substance PROPYLAL were found under a limit of detection at the end of the test.

According to the calculated Henry's law constant (H = 661 Pa.m³/mol) the test substance PROPYLAL is a volatile substance, which relates to results of analytical measurements in preliminary test.

Though the test substance PROPYLAL was toxic for algae because the highest inhibition of growth rate was 19.6 % and the highest inhibition of yield was 63.5 % in the preliminary test.

Based on the toxicity of the test substance for the yield found in the preliminary test, the full test was performed.

The full test was performed in range of test substance nominal concentrations 4 - 100 mg/L. The analytical results showed that concentrations determinated at the beginning of the test decreased for 98.5 - 100% at the end of the test. Therefore the average exposure concentrations were used for all evaluations and results.

Test results:

72 hour – ErC50 > 15.8 mg/L (average exposure concentration)

72 hour – EyC50 = 5.97 mg/L (average exposure concentration)

(95% confidence limit: 5.14 - 6.80 mg/L)

72 hour- NOECr = 1.09 mg/L (average exposure concentration)

72 hour - NOECy < 1.09 mg/L (average exposure concentration)
