Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity studies with substance zinc dipropionate are not available. In the assessment of substance zinc dipropionate, read-across to the assessment entities soluble zinc substances and propionate is conservatively applied since the ions of substance zinc dipropionate determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. The aquatic hazard assessment is based on the most toxic moiety, i.e. the zinc cation.

Please refer to the section for the respective assessment entity for data on the moieties. In brief:

Propionate:

For calcium propionate the EC20 value for respiration inhibition of activated domestic sludge was determined to range between 500 and 1040 mg/L.

Zinc:

NOEC of 0.1 mg Zn/L derived in a nitrification inhibition test.
