key study
Study period:
2016-06-21
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Remarks:
not performed according to GLP
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
no
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Burning time:
20 min
Remarks on result:
other: The substance melts on contact with the flame. The molten substance ignites and propagates combustion in 20 min along 200 mm.

The test item is not highly flammable. The substance melts on contact with the flame. The molten substance ignites and propagates combustion in 20 min along 200 mm. As combustion along 200 mm of the powder train took much mor than the cut value of four minutes, the substance is considered as not highly flammable and in accordance with guideline (EC) No. 440/2008, A.10 no further testing was initiated.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test item is not highly flammable. The substance melts on contact with the flame. The molten substance ignites and propagates combustion in 20 min along
200 mm. The resulting burning rate of 0.17 mm/s is below the cut value for classification.
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information

Zinc dipropionate is not highly flammable, has no pyrophoric properties and does not emit flammable gases in contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Flammability of solids

In a test according to guideline (EC) No. 440/2008, A.10, the substance melts on contact with the flame, the molten substance ignites and propagates combustion in 20 min along 200 mm. The resulting burning rate of 0.17 mm/s is below the cut value for classification as highly flammable.

Flammability in contact with water

The substance does not contain groups that might lead to a reaction with water or damp air, leading to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in practical handling of the substance shows that it does not react with water (cf. section 1, Annex XI of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006).

Pyrophoric properties

This substance does not contain any chemical groups that might lead to spontaneous ignition a short time after coming in contact with air at room temperature (circa 20°C). The ionic and anionic moieties of zinc dipropionate are present in stable oxidation states. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in handling shows that the substance does not ignite in contact with air (cf. section 1, Annex XI of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Zinc dipropionate is not "highly flammable" according to the criteria of the  EEC-Directive 92/69 EEC, A.10 "Flammability (solids)", has no pyrophoric properties and does not contain groups that might lead to a reaction with water or damp air, leading to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable.

According to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) of the United Nations, zinc dipropionate does not have to be classified as flammable. According to the criteria of REGULATION (EC) No 1272/2008 and its subsequent adaptations, zinc dipropionate does not have to be classified and has no obligatory labelling requirement for flammability.
