The bioconcentration factor (BCF) for 3-methylpyridine was determined by two methods: direct measurement and by estimation by QSAR. The two values are similar; the directly measured value validates the estimated QSAR value, and the use of the QSAR model for the estimation of BCF in this chemical category (pyridine, 2-methylpyridine, 3-methylpyridine and 4-methylpyridine).

An OECD guideline study conducted by the Japan National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) resulted in a BCF of 2.6 L/kg wet weight as measured in Cyprinus carpio (common carp), a freshwater fish. This value was used as the BCF for aquatic habitats.

The BCF was also estimated by BCFBAF v3.00, a model within Estimation Programs Interface Suite™ for Microsoft ® Windows, v4.00. The estimated BCFof 2.876 L/kg wet weight is useful to evaluate the potential for bioaccumulation in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats, and was used as the BCF for terrestrial habitats.
