Preliminary test:

The test mixture was prepared by mixing 1,3-bis(3-methyl-2,5-dioxo-1H-pyrrolinylmethyl)benzene thoroughly with dried cellulose in the proportions 2 of 1,3-bis(3-methyl-2,5-dioxo-1H-pyrrolinylmethyl)benzene to 1 of cellulose by weight.

A plugged 35 mm glass funnel was filled with the test mixture and inverted onto an asbestos board.

An attempt was made to ignite the pile with a gas burner resulting in a burn time of 3 mins 56.8 sec. A pile of 3:2 barium nitrate: cellulose mixture of equal dimensions took 1 min 45.8 secs to burn.

Main test:

Test mixtures were prepared by mixing 1,3-bis(3-methyl-2,5-dioxo-1H-pyrrolinylmethyl)benzene in different proportions (10 % - 90 % of 1,3-bis(3-methyl-2,5-dioxo-1H-pyrrolinylmethyl)benzene) with dried cellulose powder by weight. A barium nitrate reference mixture was prepared in the proportions 3 of barium nitrate to 2 of cellulose by weight. The test mixtures were then formed into olles 250 mm long and attempts made to ignite one end. After ignition, the first 30 mm of each pile was allowed to burn and the time (in seconds) recorded for the next 200 mm to burn.
