Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
AFTER INHALATION:
After inhalation of greater quantities of dust, take affected person to fresh air.
ON CONTACT WITH SKIN:
Wash skin with water and soap after work.
ON CONTACT WITH THE EYES:
Rinse with plenty of water.
IF SWALLOWED:
Drink water.
PARTICULAR ADVICES FOR THE PHYSICIAN:
None.
Fire-fighting measures
SUITABLE EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:
Foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder, water spray jet.
UNSUTABLE EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:
Direct water spray jet.
PARTICULAR RISKS ARISING FROM THE SUBSTANCE, ITS PREPARATION, ITS PRODUCTS OF COMUBTION OR FORMED GASES:
Dusts may glow in oxygen-containing atmosphere above 350°C. During glowing and in case of fire carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide is generated.
SPECIAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR FIRE-FIGHTING:
None, in case of insufficient ventilation use respiration equipment (against carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide).
Accidental release measures
PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS:
If dust occurs during machining, use protective mask (P1).
ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS:
None.
METHODS FOR CLEANING/REMOVAL:
Remove mechanically.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
None.
Handling and storage
HANDLING
ADVICE ON SAFE HANDLING:
None.
ADVICE ON PROTECTION AGAINST FIRE AND EXPLOSION:
Graphite dusts with particles sizes from 4 to 40 µm are able to explode in a wide range of concentrations. The minimum ignition energy is 1kJ for the finest dust. The dusts tested were ranked as St.1 class. Denkevits, A. (2003)
STORAGE
REQUIREMENTS ON STORAGE AREAS AND TANKS:
