EC number: 231-955-3 | CAS number: 7782-42-5
The purpose of this study was the determination of the melting point of the test item according to the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008,
Part A: Methods for the determination of physico-chemical properties.
A.1. Melting point / melting range
and OECD test guidelines,
OECD 102 (1995) Melting point / melting range
OECD 113 (1981) Screening test for thermal stability and stability in air
The DSC-run in a tall aluminium crucible with a hole showed no endothermic effects in the temperature range 25 - 600 °C. After the measurement the test item was unchanged.
For REACH-purposes a study has been carried out in a limited temperature range up to 600°C. Although study has been terminated at a temperature of 600°C the melting point of Graphite is fair above 600°C. Study result is applicable to Expanded Graphite Powder as well as to Synthetic Graphite.
According to literature (Handbook of Chemistry and Physics 70th Edition 1989 -1990) graphite sublimes at a temperature of 3652 – 3697 °C – in vacuum at 1500 °C.
