Results and discussion

Preliminary study:
Rats exposed to 1000 ppm of NH3 were not noticeably affected till the end of the experiment of 16 h.
Rats continued to eat occasionally and climb around the cages during the experiments. Several began bedding at the end of the first hour and two older individuals showed some evidences of slight dyspnea. At the end of the exposure (16h) the eyes of all rats were bright with little or no evidence of lachrymation.

Two rats killed for autopsy showed all organs natural. Typical gross findings at autopsy of a rat which died 12 h after exposure showed findings in brain, lungs, heart, liver, stomach, intestine, adrenal and kidneys. Not remarkable findings were observed in trachea, gall bladder and peritoneal surfaces
Gas ammonia concentration tested was 1000 ppm.

The animals that survived the treatments and the controls were kept under observation for about 5 months.
