Remarks:
The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method, and under GLP. However, the test was not suitable for the substance, due to hydrolysis, the determination does not relate to the parent species. Moreover, the test item identification is incomplete (unspecified cis-trans isomery, therefore identified under the generic CAS 17129-06-5). Therefore validation cannot be granted.

The surface tension of twice-distilled water at 20°C was measured to be 69.8 mN/m. This yields a calibration factor of 72.8/69.8=1.043.

The surface tension of the solution of the test substance in water (0.98 g/L) at the temperature of 20°C stabilizes to 62.9 mN/m.

Conclusions:
No surface activity is anticipated from the release of ETFBO to water.
Executive summary:

The surface tension of the test substance was measured, under GLP, according to EU A.5 guideline, ring method. A single determination was performed, as a function of time, and found as 62.9 mN/m, for a 0.98 g/L (nominal) concentration of test substance. It should be noted that the test substance hydrolyses readily in water, so the result applies to the hydrolysis products.

Description of key information

The study cannot be conducted on the parent substance because of decomposition. A 1 g/L solution (i.e. containing the degradation products) has a surface-tension of 62.9 mN/m; it is therefore regarded as NOT surface-active.

Additional information

An attempt was made to determine the surface tension of the substance, in an experimental study, conducted according to EU guideline and GLP. The solution was found to have no surface-active properties, however the study was considered not valid, since the water solubility and hydrolysis studies revealed that the substance was not stable in water. Therefore the surface tension study relates to the properties of the degradation products, and not of the parent compound. It was nevertheless considered of scientific interest, with regard to environmental fate and behaviour, to include it as supporting information.
