Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment

Administrative data

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Not P and not vP based on:

Dimethyl carbonate was found to be readily biodegradable in a modified MITI test (OECD 301 C)

-----

Not B and not vB based on:

The substance dimethyl carbonate is not regarded as bioaccumulative (not B or vB) because of Log Kow ≤ 4.5 (Log Kow = 0.354).

Other evidence of not B and not vB:

Biodegradation in soil and sediment:

The Mackay level 1 fugacity model indicates that dimethyl carbonate is distributed into two compartments, air (54.46%) and water (45.45%). Negligible amounts partition into soil, sediment and biota. Therefore it is considered not necessary to investigate biodegradation in soil and sediment.

Distribution modelling studies by LSR Associates Ltd (2010).

Not T based on:

EC10 or NOEC ≥ 0.01 mg/L for marine / freshwater organisms (long-term toxicity)

The short-term aquatic toxicity evaluation indicated a NOEC ≥ 100 mg/L for fish, daphnia and algae.

Long-term aquatic toxicity on daphnia showed a NOEC ≥ 0.01 mg/L (NOEC = 25mg/l).

Also, the substance is not classified as carcinogenic (category 1 or 2), mutagenic (category 1 or 2), or toxic for reproduction (category 1, 2 or 3) according to Directive 67/548/EEC or carcinogenic (category 1A or 1B), germ cell mutagenic (category 1A or 1B), or toxic for reproduction (category 1A, 1B or 2) according to Regulation EC No 1272/2008.

Also, there is no other evidence of chronic toxicity, as identified by the classifications T, R48 or Xn, R48 according to Directive 67/548/EEC or specific target organ toxicity after repeated exposure (STOT RE category 1 or 2) according to Regulation EC No 1272/2008.
