Measured ecotoxicity data are not available for the aquatic toxicity endpoints and PNECs have not been derived for freshwater, saltwater, sediment, and soil.

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII and VIII, the toxicity tests do not need to be conducted if there are mitigating factors indicating that toxicity is unlikely to occur. This Category consists of substances which are gases at standard temperature and pressure and are expected to partition primarily to air; therefore toxicity tests may not be relevant. In addition, it is technically difficult to maintain concentrations of gases for toxicity testing.

Conclusion on classification

The substances in the category are gases and will predominantly partition to the atmosphere, which will limit the toxicity. Due to the difficulty associated with conducting toxicity tests, experimental data were not available for the members of this category. In the absence of measured data, estimated data were calculated using the QSAR model ECOSAR Program v1.00. in EPI Suite v4.00.

 

Calculations were conducted using substances which were considered representative of the category members (methane, ethane, propane, butane, isobutane). The toxicity of the substances was calculated to range from 7.71 mg/L to 147.54 mg/L for the different aquatic taxonomic groups. Based on the available data, streams in this category would not meet the criteria for classification under the DSD and the CLP regulations.
