Glass jars were used as test containers. 750 g of artificial soil which had been treated with one of the test chemicals (or a control with no chemicals) were placed in each jar. Ten E. fetida each with live weights of approximately 1 mg were added to each jar. There were four replicates of each chemical and dose.

There are no studies available on the toxicity of trisodium HEDTA to soil macroorganisms, however the effects of EDTA were investigated in Eisenia fetida. After 14 days of exposure, an LC50 of 156 mg EDTA/kg soil dw was obtained. Assuming 100% purity of the test substance, this is equivalent to ca. 184 mg Na3-HEDTA (based on a molecular weight of 292.24 for EDTA and 344.20 for Na3-HEDTA). This value was retained for the CSA.
