Reference
Endpoint:
particle size distribution (granulometry)
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Conducted according to suitable methodology and acceptable for assessment. This study is considered to be scientifically justified for use as a key study.
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The determination of particle size was made by a screening process with a specific mesh size in an air jet made by subpressure.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
other: The determination of particle size was made by a screening process with a specific mesh size in an air jet made by subpressure.
Type of distribution:
volumetric distribution
Percentile:
D50
Remarks on result:
other: Migrated from fields under 'Mass median diameter' as D50 percentile. No source field for Standard deviation.
No.:
#1
Size:
< 45 µm
Distribution:
> 99 %

PROCEDURE:

Install test sieve, prescribed by the specification of the product. Weigh exactly 100 g of the sample into the weighing bottle and transfer it on to screen. Closed the lid and sieve for 3 mins in total. If fine materials stick together, they must be spread out with low pressure by using a brush during the sieve machine works.

Then close the lid again and sieve for the rest of the time. Weigh the oversize after 3 mins sieving.

Calculation:

Screen oversize (%) = residue (g) *100 /weight in g

Screen undersize (%) =100% - % screen oversize

Conclusions:
Particle size distribution indicates the substance is an inhalation risk (a significant proportion of the particles are present at < 100 µm).
