Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The result of this solubility limit test corresponds to the physical solubility of red phosphorus and has to be distinguished from hydrolysis in water (see CSR 4.1.1.1).

Red phosphorus as such is physically insoluble in water due to its polymeric nature.

But suspending of red phosphorus in water leads to an immediately released removal of small amounts of water-soluble phosphorus oxyacids impurities (oxyacids) from the particle surface and a subsequent very slow continuous chemical reaction with water. Both effects are related to hydrolysis and not to the physical solubility of red phosphorus.
