Additional information

The substances are involatile and (are demonstrated or expected to) undergo thermal decomposition.

The requirement to test the substance for pyrophoricity and flammability in contact with water was waived in accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex IX, because there is no indication on the basis of structure and experience in use and handling that the substance is pyrophoric (flammable in contact with air) or flammable in contact with water.

The burning behaviour of the test item using test method VDI 2263, Part 1, indicated that the substance will produce a flame in contact with ignition source. However, the flame will not propagate along the material and on removal of the ignition source, the flame self-extinguishes. Similarly, a 5 mm layer ignition temperature study by the same author (Rowe 2002, report number 18602) showed that no ignition was observed for the substance using IEC 61241 -2 -1, 1994, Method A and in compliance with GLP. Therefore, it can be concluded that EDTMP-xCaNa is a non-flammable solid. Also, available data for commercial samples indicate the substance not to be flammable and a minimum ignition energuy of >10000 mJ was also reported.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is not classified for flammability as no ignition was observed during the study conducted in accordance to Test Method VDI 2263, Part 1.
