Description of key information

non corrosive to metals

Additional information

The corrosivity to metals of 2-(dimethylamino)-2-methylpropan-1-ol (DMAMP) was investigated according to the U.S. National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) Corrosion Test Standard TM169 -76 (Item No. 530003). The corrosion rate for selected aluminium and copper alloys was significantly below the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) limit of 250 mils (0.25 inches) per year, being in the respective ranges 0.00 - 0.02 mils per year (aluminium) and 1.79 -1.92 mils per year (copper). Although for the purposes of present CLP corrosion to metal is considered, by pure convention, for substances that are liable to attack aluminium and carbon steel and not copper alloys, it is not to be expected that the results for steel will be significantly different than those obtained for aluminium and copper alloys (e.g. aluminium has a more negative oxidation/reduction potential of -1.66 V than iron). In addition, the experience with steel-made reactors where the substance is produced shows that DMAMP is not corrosive to steel. Thus the substance need not be classified as "corrosive to metals" according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging (CLP) of substances and mixtures.
