Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment
Administrative data
PBT assessment: overall result
- PBT status:
- further information relevant for the PBT assessment is necessary
- Justification:
Rosin ester substances are UVCB substances made up of constituents with different properties, which will behave differently when released to the environment. The PBT assessment of rosin ester substances therefore considers the PBT potential of each of the constituents, rather than the substance as a whole.
Rosin ester substances consist of esters of rosin, and non-esterified resin acids. The rosin esters can be mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-esters depending on the alcohol and the production process. Methanol can form mono-esters, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and triethylene glycol can form mono- and di- esters, glycerol can form mono-, di- and tri-esters and pentaerythritol can form mono-, di-, tri- and tetra-esters. In each case, the esterification reaction results in a UVCB containing esters with varying numbers of ester bonds formed by the reaction of the various resin acids with the alcohol. In addition, non-esterified resin acids will also remain as constituents in the UVCB.
Detailed analysis of each individual constituent within the category is not available and so a list of constituents thought to be present has been developed from information in the Substance Identity Profiles for each substance. All identified constituents were assessed individually for their PBT properties.
There is little experimental data on Persistence (P) and Bioaccumulation (B) of the registered substance or its individual constituents. Two members of this category are currently being assessed under the Community Rolling Action Plan (CoRAP) Resin acids and rosin acids, hydrogenated, esters with glycerol (CAS No: 65997-13-9) andResin acids and rosin acids. hydrogenated, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS No: 64365-17-9). Previously, the monoesters of these two substances were identified as potentially being PBT. As such, an OECD 310 on the Monoesters of Hydrogenated Rosin with Glycerol was undertaken with additional analytical support to prove that it is not Persistent and therefore Not PBT/vPvB. A similar study is currently underway to show that the Monoesters of Hydrogenated Rosin with Pentaerythritol is not persistent.
The previous PBT assessments submitted for this Category have been updated. As part of this update, all the blocks of constituents listed in the Substance Identity Profile for substances in this category have been included and at least 1 representative structure has been identified for each block. The previous QSARs have also been re-run to ensure they are up to date and valid.
The consituents assessed and the conclusion is presented in the table below.
