Type of test item Shavings

Application of the flame Until 2 min maximum

Test period 2 min

Preliminary test

Assays 1 and 2: The test item glowed, blackened and melted. Neither propagation nor ignition was observed.

Taking into account the results obtained during the preliminary test, no main test was performed.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The reaction mass of TFSK/TFAK tested as solid form is not flammable.
Executive summary:

The objective of the study was to determine the flammability of a solid item and the packing group of the test item, according to the UN Test N.1 (Part III, Section 33.2.1.4) guideline and under GLP conditions.

The test item glowed, blackened and melted. Neither propagation nor ignition was observed. The test item is not classified as flammable solids

Description of key information

Based on experimental data, the dry reaction mass is not flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

The reaction mass of potassium trifluoromethanesulphinate and potassium trifluoroacetate is manufactured and used in aqueous solution. In accordance with the ECHA guidance R7a (Nov. 2012), the physicochemical studies reporting data relevant for classification as a flammable liquid are flashpoint and boiling point. Both data are available for the aqueous solution of the reaction mass and are reported in the sections 4.11 and 4.3 of the present IUCLID file, and show that the reaction mass of potassium trifluoromethanesulphinate and potassium trifluoroacetate in aqueous solution is non flammable.

Testing for pyrophoric properties is not considered to be required, since this substance is stable at ambient temperature. This substance also does not contain any chemical groups that might lead to spontaneous ignition a short time after coming in contact with air at room temperature (circa 20°C). Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in handling shows that the substance does not ignite in contact with air (in accordance with section 1, Annex XI of regulation (EC) 1907/2006 ).

Testing of flammability in contact with water is not considered to be required, because the substance does not contain groups that might lead to a reaction with water or damp air, leading to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in practical handling of the substance shows that it does not react with water, and recent experimental testing for water solubility has also not reported any formation of gases (in accordance with section 1, Annex XI of regulation (EC) 1907/2006 ).

For the dry reaction mass (solid form), the relevant test for flammable properties is the flammability under ignition. The flammability of the test item, was determined according to UN Guideline. The substance was tested as supplied. No propagation of combustion was observed and therefore the dry reaction mass of TFSK/TFAK is not considered as flammable.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The reaction mass is manufactured and used in aqueous solution. Based on the flashpoint and boiling point performed on this aqueous solution, it is not classified as a flammable liquid.

The pure reaction mass tested as solid failed to propagate combustion in the preliminary test and therefore it is not classified as a flammable solid.
