Conclusion on classification
Calcium azelate does not meet the criteria for classification for environmental hazards. The substance is readily biodegradable and has a low potential for bioaccumulation based on a log Kow of -2.6. Ecotoxicity data for calcium azelate have been read across from the structural analogue, dilithium azelate. No effects were seen in the study on Daphnia magna following OECD 202, with the EC50 reported as >100 mg/L WAF. In the algal growth inhibition study according to OECD 201, the EC50 for growth rate inhibition (72h-ERC50) and inhibition of yield (72h-EYC50) were both >100 mg/L. The 72h-NOEC for growth rate 100 mg/L and for yield was 10 mg/L and the EC10 for growth rate was >100 mg/L and for yield was 19 mg/L. As the short-term effect concentrations were >1 mg/L, calcium azelate does not meet the criteria for classification for acute environmental toxicity. As calcium azelate is readily biodegradable, has a low potential for bioaccumulation, and long-term toxicity effect concentrations (algal NOEC) were >1 mg/L, the substance does not meet the criteria for classification for chronic environmental toxicity.
