A study to determine self-heating properties of test item, calcium azelate, was conducted following the UN N.4 guideline (“Test Method for Self-heating Substances”). The test item was exposed to air at 140°C for 24 hours and the temperature of the sample and the oven were recorded at time intervals of 5 minutes.
No spontaneous ignition occurred and no exothermic effect of the test item was observed, therefore the test item is considered “not a self-heating substance”.
The study was conducted according to standard guidelines and is GLP-compliant and therefore is considered as reliable without restrictions.

The flame of the gas burner did ignite the test item pile. The test item glowed, burned with an orange flame and turned into a black charred residue. Black smoke was observed. After removal of the ignition source, the flame extinguished after 5 seconds and no propagation of combustion was observed.
During the experiment no spontaneous ignition occurred and no exothermic effect of the test item was observed. It demonstrated that the test item is “not a self-heating substance”. According to the UN guideline, no further testing was required.
After the experiment, the consistency of the sample was unchanged, i.e. no reaction and/or decomposition of the test item was observed.

The test item was exposed to air at 140°C for 24 hours in a temperature controlled laboratory oven and the temperature of the sample and the oven were recorded with time intervals of 5 minutes. No spontaneous ignition occurred and no exothermic effect of the test item was observed, therefore the test item is considered ‘not a self-heating substance’.
Both studies were conducted according to standard guidelines and are GLP-compliant and therefore are considered as reliable without restrictions (Klimisch 1).
Justification for classification or non-classification
Calcium azelate is considered to be ‘not flammable’ as no propagation of combustion of the test item along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed in the preliminary screening test conducted according to the UN N.1 guideline (Volic 2019). Therefore, calcium azelate does not need to be classified for flammability.
Based on the results of the study conducted according to the UN N.4 method (Volic 2019), calcium azelate does not need to be classified as a self-heating substance.
