A study was conducted according to Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.9, ASTM D6450, ASTM D7094, ASTM D93 and OPPTS 830.6315 to determine the flash point of the test item using a closed cup method with Pensky-Martens apparatus. A screening test was performed with a search program to determine the rough flash point. For the main test about 2 g of the test item were filled in the cup. The first ignition trial of the main test was performed at a temperature range of 30 - 200 °C with heating rate of 5.5 °C/min. The test was performed three times. The measured flash point at atmospheric pressure was corrected to a standard pressure of 1013 hPa. The flash point was determined to be 51 °C at 1013.25 hPa.
Reference
The flash point of Dodecane was determined to be 79.4 °C, hardly deviating from the literature value (78.6°C, ASTM D 7094, Table X1.1).
For the determination of the initial temperature of flash point measurement a screen test was performed with the test item. The sample was heated from 30 °C to 200 °C (or to the flash point) using 5.5 °C/min heating rate. Based on this preliminary test the flash point of the test item was determined to be: 50.5 °C. In the course of the study three subsequent tests with the test item were carried out. The measured flash points of the test item were: 50.5 °C, 50.5 °C and 51.5 °C resulting a mean value: 51 °C at 101.3 kPa.
