As reported in SIDS Dossier of MnO2 approved at SIAM 25 (17 -18 October 2007) with reference to WHO, 2004, Manganese and its compounds: environmental aspect, International Program on Chemical Safety, manganese is an essential element and is, therefore, actively assimilated and utilized by both plants and animals; however, it can be significantly bioconcentrated by aquatic biota at lower trophic levels. However, the relatively smaller bioconcentration of manganese in higher organisms, such as fish, means that biomagnifications of manganese in the food chain probably is not significant.
