Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: VDI 2263
Principles of method if other than guideline:
An explosibility screening test was conducted based on Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) 2263, Part 1 (Section 2.1.1), “Dust fires and dust explosions; hazards, assessment, protective measures”, using a 1.2-L Modified Hartmann-Apparatus with a 10 J AC electric arc. A positive result is evidenced by visible flames in the apparatus. If a negative result is obtained with the Modified Hartmann, a confirmatory test is conducted in the 20-L chamber using ASTM E1226, “Standard Test Method for Explosibility of Dust Clouds” (Section 13). The criterion used for an “explosion” in the 20-L chamber is a 1-bar overpressure after accounting for the influence of the 5-kJ ignition source. These screening tests are used to identify if the sample is combustible in a dust cloud form.
Also, a combustibility screening test, based on VDI 2263, “Dust fires and dust explosions; hazards, assessment, protective measures”, was conducted. This test is designed to determine the ignitability and the combustibility/burning behavior of a dried solid product in a pile (i.e. not suspended in a cloud; but dust deposited on a flat surface) when it is subjected to a 1000°C torch flame for approximately 5 seconds (20 seconds for metals).

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
Under the conditions of the explosibility screening test conducted based on Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) 2263, the test item is considered to be non-explosible in dust cloud form.
The results from the combustibility screening test based on VDI 2263 demonstrated that the test item did not ignite when in contact with the ignition source.
