Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Volumetric distribution (laser diffraction) was used for the determination of the particle size distribution of various forms of the registered substanc in water. The particle size (D50) typically ranges between 0.4- 2.18 µm, but, depending on the morphology of the substance, can be >=5 µm as well.
* Magnesium aluminium hydroxide carbonate (EC 234-319-3):
- in water: 97.6% is ≤ 1 µm and 0% is ≥ 5 µm; 10% is < 0.21 µm, 50% is < 0.41 µm and 90% is < 0.80 µm.
- in air: 0% is < 1 µm and 2.28% is < 10 µm; 10% is < 24.6 µm, 50% is < 58.4 µm and 90% is < 185.8 µm.
* Alcamizer P93 (EC 423-570-6, Aluminium magnesium zinc carbonate hydroxide):
96% is < 2 µm and 100% is < 5 µm.
MMD: 0.8 µm
* Alcamizer 5 (EC 422-150-1, Aluminium magnesium carbonate hydroxide perchlorate hydrate):
99.2% is ≤ 10 µm; 10% is < 0.61 µm, 50% is < 2.17 µm and 90% is < 5.46 µm.
MMAD: 3.2 µm (calculated using density data, MMAD = (2.16)^0.5 x 2.174)

Additional information

D50 values of analogue substances Alcamizer P93 (EC no. 423 -570 -6), HT-6 (EC no. 234 -319 -3) and Alcamizer 5 (EC no. 422 -150 -1) are in principle comparable to the D50 values of Aluminium magensium carbonate hydroxide.

Based on only the PSD results, none of the substances should be regarded as a nanomaterial (<100 nm). However, such assessment should also take other parameters and information into account, such as specific surface area and SEM evaluations. Please refer to section 1.4 for more information.
