Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The toxicity of 2 -(2 -aminoethylamino)ethanol to activated sludge was tested in a study conducted according to guideline ISO 8192 B. The respiration of the activated sludge was reduced by 50 % after 30 min of incubation at a substance concentration of > 1003 mg/l (BASF AG 1985).

A comparable result is reported by a study investigating the respiration inhibition induced by the substance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas putida. An EC50 of 1042 mg/l was determined after 8 hours of incubation (Emtiazi and Knapp, 1994). A lower EC50 value (134.8 mg/l) was determined in a study on P. putida conducted in compliance with DIN 38412, part 8. The incubation period in this test was 17 h (BASF AG, 1988).
